Air Quality Reached Unhealthy Levels

22 April 2024 - 17:02

The Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Service has issued an urgent warning, alerting residents and visitors of Antigua and Barbuda to take precautions as the air quality has reached “unhealthy” levels for sensitive groups.

Climatologist Dale Destin has explained that the dust is due to high concentrations of particulate matter associated with a surge of Saharan dust across the islands.

The dust has led to an Air Quality Index between 101-150, which poses an increased likelihood of respiratory symptoms among vulnerable groups such as people with asthma, heart or lung disease, the elderly, children, and those with allergies.

The airborne particulates can also aggravate cardiovascular issues and eye and skin irritations.

The air quality alert has been issued due to a surge of dust originating from the Saharan Desert that has spread across the Caribbean region, spiking particulate matter concentrations to unhealthy levels.

The Meteorological Service reports that these high concentrations of airborne particles pose increased risks, making it necessary to issue advisories and recommend precautionary measures to prevent any adverse health effects.

Health officials advise sensitive individuals to limit their time outdoors and avoid strenuous outdoor activities until the air quality improves.

The general public is also urged to take precautions such as keeping windows and doors closed as much as possible, wearing filtering face masks when going outside, and monitoring symptoms and seeking medical care if issues arise.

Forecasting models indicate that the dust levels should decrease by tomorrow afternoon, allowing air quality to return to moderate levels across Antigua and Barbuda.

The Meteorological Service will continue updating its website, antiguamet.com, and social media channels with information on air quality and dust concentrations.

By taking some preventative measures, the risk from this temporary dust incursion can be managed until cleaner air prevails.
