Richard Lewis, the Parliamentary Representative for St John’s City West, has expressed grave concerns about the rapidly escalating crime rate in Antigua and Barbuda.

In a press statement released on Friday, Lewis criticized the Minister of National Security and Public Safety, Steadroy “Cutie” Benjamin, for his inability to address the dangerous situation.

The crime wave in Antigua and Barbuda has reached alarming levels, with public safety at an all-time low.

Despite Benjamin’s promises to support the police force, develop a crime-fighting strategy, and provide a forensic crime lab, none of these promises have been fulfilled to date.

Lewis further noted that the Minister has not consulted with community groups to address their concerns and recommendations to combat the increasing crime rate.

As the public trembles in fear, Benjamin’s deafening silence and lack of action have been irresponsible and negligent.

The Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, Gaston Browne, has also failed to hold Minister Benjamin accountable for his blatant failure.

Lewis questioned whether the Prime Minister has little concern for the preservation of public safety, the protection of private property, the collective mental health of the people, and Antigua and Barbuda’s reputation as a safe place for tourism and investment.

Lewis called for immediate and decisive action from Steadroy “Cutie” Benjamin and his leader, Gaston Browne, to address the spiraling crime crisis in Antigua and Barbuda before it’s too late.
