The government of Antigua and Barbuda has expressed its condolences to the people of St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Grenada following the devastation caused by record-breaking Hurricane Beryl.

On Monday, Hurricane Beryl tore through Grenada in a matter of minutes, destroying buildings and knocking out power and phone service for nearly all residents, according to the governor’s office.

The storm also ravaged neighbouring St. Vincent and the Grenadines, where at least one person has been reported dead, as stated by Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves. Many areas, including hospitals, are without electricity and some are also lacking water.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne of Antigua and Barbuda expressed sympathy for the leaders of both affected countries, drawing parallels to the destruction experienced by Barbuda during Hurricane Irma.

“The devastation is similar in Carriacau and Union Island, and Antigua and Barbuda is proud of the strong culture of solidarity and support within Caricom. This support was particularly evident in 2017 when Irma and Maria devastated the region,” Browne said.

Browne recommended organizing a pledging conference to raise funds for recovery efforts, noting that the damage will cost millions if not billions, and exceeds the resources available in the region.

“We may need to seek extra-regional support. If we can do this under the auspices of the UN and secure pledges from wealthier nations, it will help mobilize resources for relief and recovery,” Browne added.

To assist in the aftermath, two contingents of officers from the Antigua and Barbuda Defence Force and the Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda arrived early Tuesday as part of the Regional Security System’s (RSS) efforts.

Additionally, the government has coordinated with MV Dawn to transport water and relief supplies to the affected islands. The Prime Minister also committed the Defence Force Airwing to provide further support to the RSS if needed.

“We are going all out to help with the recovery efforts,” Browne stated.

Gaston Browne will be glad to get his hands on some of those relief funds like he did the funds for Barbuda in 2017. His eyes on the the wealth nations money.
