Legal proceedings in the case against Karim Edwards, accused of fatally injuring one medical student and severely wounding another in a dangerous driving incident, have been postponed until September following a significant legal manoeuvre by the defence.
The incident in question occurred on October 23, 2022, when Edwards allegedly struck two American University of Antigua (AUA) students crossing Friars Hill Road.
The collision had tragic consequences, claiming the life of 21-year-old Kenneth Mathew, who succumbed to severe brain trauma on November 1, 2022.
His companion, 19-year-old Priyanjana Das, survived but suffered extensive injuries, including the amputation of her right arm, fractures to her left arm, and pelvic trauma.
Edwards, initially charged with dangerous driving, now faces the more serious charge of causing death by dangerous driving due to Mathew’s passing.
The case has encountered multiple delays since its inception.
In the latest development, Edwards’ attorney, Wendel Robinson, has filed a no-case submission, aiming to have the charges dismissed.
This legal strategy has resulted in another adjournment, with the next court date set for September 11.
