Antigua and Barbuda Leaders Unite for National Day of Prayer: Plans for Annual Observance Announced

By Aabigayle McIntosh

Politicians from across the political spectrum came together to praise the Ecclesiastical Commission for its successful organization of the National Day of Prayer.

Thousands of citizens and residents participated in church services, prayer sessions, and a prayer march culminating at the Antigua Recreation Grounds.

Health Minister Sir Molwyn Joseph, speaking near the end of the program, applauded Opposition Leader Jamal Pringle for setting aside political differences to join in the event.

He hinted at plans to make the National Day of Prayer an annual event, stating, “As a minister of Ecclesiastical Affairs, I cannot do it alone.”

Pringle, calling the event “blessed,” expressed support for its institutionalization, emphasizing the need for prayer in the country.

He also committed to working with any group dedicated to supporting the youth of Antigua and Barbuda.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne echoed these sentiments and proposed elevating the National Day of Prayer to a full-day holiday to boost participation.

He emphasized that the observance would involve mandatory participation from school children, politicians, and all sectors of society.

“We recognize the importance of prayer and being consistent with it,” Browne said, committing to further consultation with the Ecclesiastical Commission to establish a date in September.

Browne also assured that no official government business would be conducted on this day, ensuring full attendance by all government officials and urging the opposition leader to do the same.

  1. His face and facial expression look like how I imagine Satan would look if cornered by accident in a church service in progress. That photo tells it all. Poor boy! It was a case damned if I do (attend) damned I don’t. He obviously did not want to be there, does not want to see a spiritual awakening in the country, is not interested in̈ a gang-free country. Maybe, “as school children say” he and his own band of thugs are the ones responsible for the formation, expansion and outfitting of gangs in this country as a survival technique for the senior gang headed by boss lady….. just look at that face!

    • This is a step in the right direction. I wholeheartedly commend the Minister of Ecclesiastical Affairs and the Government of Antigua for this bold step in declaring a definite direction for the country. Blessed is the country whose God is the Lord. May the Lord of all the earth hear our prayers and heal our wounded land.
