The Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Services has issued a flash flood advisory for Antigua, effective until 4 pm today. The advisory warns of potential minor flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas across the island.
Meteorologists report that the combination of available low-level moisture and daytime heating is triggering periodic heavy showers over Antigua. As a result, residents should be prepared for the possibility of streams, creeks, and drains overflowing into streets and flood-prone areas.
While property damage is expected to be minimal, the advisory emphasizes that even seemingly minor flooding can pose significant risks.
“Just one foot of flowing water is enough to sweep vehicles off the road,” the advisory stated.
He urged drivers to exercise extreme caution when encountering flooded roads, advising them to “make the smart choice, turn around don’t drown” if in doubt.
The Meteorological Services stressed that while the flooding is not anticipated to be immediately life-threatening, it could cause inconveniences for residents and travellers. They recommend that people in affected areas move to higher ground as a precautionary measure.
Authorities will continue to monitor the situation closely.
