Antiguans will Continue to Feel the Heat Until Friday

Climatologist Dale Destin has forecasted that the ongoing heat affecting residents will continue until Friday.

According to Destin, the Heat Index or Feels-Like Temperature is expected to soar to 41°C or 106°F and even higher.

These conditions are a result of the combination of high temperatures, relatively high humidity, and gentle winds, creating extremely hot weather that poses a moderate risk of health problems, especially for vulnerable individuals.

The warning is issued when the maximum heat index temperature is expected to be 41°C or 106°F or higher for two or more consecutive days with winds of 18 km/h (11 mph) or less, and the peak heat index is likely to occur during the early afternoons.

Vulnerable groups, including the elderly, young children, lactating mothers, individuals with chronic illnesses, those who work or exercise in the heat, homeless people, and low-income earners, are at the highest risk of heat-related health issues.

These may manifest as heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke, which can lead to long-term health problems and even death.

It is vital to be prepared for excessive heat and recognize the symptoms of heat illness, such as dizziness, fainting, nausea, vomiting, headache, rapid breathing and heartbeat, or extreme thirst. If these symptoms occur, it is crucial to take immediate action by moving to a cool place and staying hydrated.

If someone displays symptoms of heat stroke, such as loss of consciousness or confusion and high body temperature, it is essential to call 911 immediately and take measures to cool the person down while waiting for help.

It is important for everyone, especially those who take medication or have a health condition, to stay cool and hydrated. Keeping in touch with updates from the Met Service through official channels and checking on vulnerable family members, friends, and neighbors is also strongly recommended.
