Reports: Senator Marshall to step down

21 October 2024 - 10:17

Senator Samantha Marshall

Reports are now surfacing from within the Antigua Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) that Senator Samantha Marshall will step down as not only the Leader of Government Business but as a senator itself.

There is no specific timeline on when this will happen or an exact reason behind her relinquishing her post, but reports are that Marshall intends to return to her private law practice.

Marshall took over the role from Senator Mary Clare Hurst.

She will join Senator Osbert Frederick who will become the new Speaker of the House, leaving his seat vacant in the Upper House.

This now means that two new senators could make their way into Parliament and a new Leader of Government Business could be appointed.

From within the ABLP camp, reports are that Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Sports, and Creative Industries, Senator Shenella Goviacould replace Marshall in that leadership position while ABLP caretaker for St. John’s Rural West Michael Joseph could be appointed to the Senate.

Lamin Newton’s name is also being considered for the Senate.

Announcements are expected to be made over the next few weeks.

  1. So that it’s not the UPP alone that is hemorrhaging after all! Is she upset that she was not considered for the post of the Speaker of the House? This country is on dire need of decent, committed. patriotic citizens to take this country forward!
