Expert Reassures: Recent Earthquakes in Antigua and Barbuda Are Normal for the Region

If you’ve been feeling concerned about the recent earthquakes in Antigua and Barbuda, it’s reassuring to know that a leading expert has confirmed that this activity is quite normal for the region.

Dr. Erouscilla Joseph, the Director of the University of the West Indies Seismic Research Centre, has explained that the recent increase in seismic events, including 82 recorded quakes over a short span of four days, aligns perfectly with the natural tectonic behavior of the area.

Just last Friday, several tremors were felt, with the initial quake registering a magnitude of 5.0 on November 15. Dr. Joseph shared that there were indeed more seismic events than initially reported, but most of these were minor tremors ranging from 0.5 to 2.9 magnitude—which are often not even noticeable.

The region sits in a subduction zone, meaning that it naturally experiences periodic earth movements as slabs of rock shift past one another.

Dr. Joseph reassured us that while this area can have active periods, the pattern of these seismic swarms is something that residents are familiar with. For instance, a similar swarm occurred in 2022, and no major concerns arose from it.

Instead of worrying, Dr. Joseph encourages everyone to focus on preparedness. Living in a multi-hazard environment can be daunting, but knowledge and readiness can give us peace of mind.

With the North American plate gradually subducting beneath the Caribbean plate, it’s a reminder that these events are expected and a part of living in such a vibrant, dynamic region.

Ultimately, embracing a mindset of “mental preparedness” while staying informed will help residents remain calm and ready. There’s no need for alarm; instead, let’s stay focused on being prepared for whatever nature may bring, knowing that we have the knowledge and resources to navigate these challenges safely.
