Lamin Newton has formally taken the oath of office, officially marking his induction as a senator in the Upper House.
The ceremony took place at the Government House, where dignitaries, family members, and enthusiastic supporters came together to celebrate this significant milestone in his political journey.
Known for his unwavering dedication to public service and deep-rooted community engagement, Newton expressed heartfelt gratitude for the privilege of representing his constituents.
In an interview with State Media, he outlined his steadfast commitment to tackling pressing issues and fostering a spirit of collaboration to advance the interests of the state.
“Today is a bittersweet moment; while I am joyous to be here, I feel a deep sense of loss that my father cannot share this experience with me. I believe he left this world to pave the way for my journey… My dad was everything to me,” he reflected, his voice laden with emotion.
Despite the personal heartache, Newton affirmed that his new role is fundamentally about the people of All Saints East and St. Luke. “This is not about me but about the people I seek to represent. That constituency has been underrepresented for far too long, and I am determined to change that,” he stated resolutely.
Newton’s passion for public service is particularly focused on vital areas such as housing and education.
“I aim to bring true representation to the people. I also want to extend my gratitude to the Prime Minister for mentoring me. He has shown immense confidence in my abilities and recognized potential within me that I didn’t even see in myself. My goal is to make him proud, as well as to honor all Antiguans and Barbudans,” he added earnestly.
In acknowledgment of those who have shaped his path, Newton gave high praise to E.P. Chet Greene, crediting him as a pivotal influence in his decision to pursue a degree in political science at the University of the West Indies’ Five Islands Campus.
As the proceedings concluded, Greene extended his warm congratulations to Newton and expressed anticipation for his future contributions, particularly in the realm of debate, highlighting that this is indeed a well-deserved moment in Newton’s promising career.
It’s the 3rd paragraph for me.

He collected his distinguished box hand.
Let’s give Lamin Newton some space. It’s hard to believe he was appointed under the cover of darkness, with no public announcement or fanfare. It seems Gaston Browne was fully aware of the potential backlash this decision would incite. Lamin has poured his heart and soul into his craft, and he deserves to enjoy the fruits of his labor in peace.
