Former Cost Pro Employee Faces Sentencing This Week for Forgery

You can now listen to Antigua News articles!

A former Cost Pro employee convicted of forging Customs officers’ signatures will learn his fate on February 21, after his sentencing was delayed due to an unavailable pre-sentencing report.

Edwin Ireland, who was found guilty of 25 counts of forgery and uttering by a servant on December 6, 2024.

The ruling was handed down by High Court Justice Ann Marie Smith pending his sentencing.

The conviction stems from Ireland’s activities between 2019 and 2020, when he allegedly misappropriated thousands of dollars by forging receipts while working at Cost Pro Supermarket.

As the sole employee responsible for paying Customs duties, Ireland exploited gaps in the company’s oversight, presenting forged receipts to receive cash payments meant for Customs officers.

During the judge-alone trial, several Customs officers testified that while they would date receipts and allow Ireland to complete remaining details, many denied the signatures appearing on the documents were theirs.

Evidence also revealed that Ireland frequently bypassed required procedures, sometimes inspecting containers without Customs officers present.

He is expected to be sentenced on Friday.
