Attorney Warren Cassell has successfully appealed his earlier conviction, which resulted in a three-and-a-half-year prison sentence for concealing illicit financial gains.
The court determined that there had been a “miscarriage of justice,” indicating that Cassell should not have been convicted in the initial trial.
Cassell, a lawyer originally from Montserrat who practiced in Antigua, had been found guilty by a jury of nine for allegedly hiding or disguising a sum of EC$855,380.54 between January 2007 and November 2008.
This was done by transferring funds from an investor’s account to a corporate account intended for the sale of land at Providence Estate.
During his original trial, which was overseen by Justice Stanley John, Cassell defended himself.
He faced a potential maximum sentence of 14 years under the Proceeds of Crime Act 1999.
