Traffic Collisions and Fatalities Decline in Antigua and Barbuda

Traffic Department reports a decrease in collisions and fatalities for the 1st quarter (file photo)

In a positive development for road safety in Antigua and Barbuda, traffic fatalities and collisions have decreased in the first quarter of this year compared to the same period in 2024.

Members of the Traffic Department within the Royal Police Force shared this encouraging news during an appearance on Observer Radio’s “Voice of the People.”

Chief Statistician Corporal Elsworth Henry reported that from January to April 2025, there were 830 traffic collisions. This marks a decrease from the 877 collisions recorded during the same period last year. In 2024, there was one fatality, while this year has seen no fatalities at all in the same timeframe.

The statistics reflect a significant drop in injuries: 72 individuals were injured in traffic incidents this year, compared to 132 injuries reported last year. Corporal Henry highlighted that rear-end accidents, often the most common type of collision, have also decreased, with 73 incidents recorded this year compared to 123 last year.

Another contributing factor to the decline in collisions is related to vehicles exiting junctions. Last year, there were 105 such incidents, which has since decreased to 83 in the current year.

The Traffic Department monitors collision statistics on five major roads: All Saints Road, Old Parham Road, Friars Hill Road, Sir George Walter Highway, and Factory Road (also known as Sir Sydney Walling Highway). Notably, All Saints Road reported the highest number of collisions during this reporting period.

Corporal Henry attributed the decrease in accidents to ongoing public education efforts by the Traffic Department aimed at promoting road safety and awareness among residents.

These statistics signal a hopeful trend in road safety within Antigua and Barbuda, highlighting positive changes in driver behavior and the effectiveness of targeted educational initiatives.

  1. Maybe the fatalities decline but I start feeling like should stop driving at times cause it’s too much accidents out here. Unless you mean severe traffic collisions. Traffic collisions have not declined. Just the other day a man in his pickup refuse to pull over and hit the side of an ambulance

  2. And what about the Accidents that were not reported? It’s too much accidents lately. I read the numbers but my eyes fail to see the decline

  3. If this s a decline then we were really in bad shape. There are so many accidents that have not yet been made public. There is a need for more vigilance on the road

  5. This is not comforting cause 800 plus accidents in 3/4 months is still a lot.
People need to be more cautious and alert on the roads
