SLBMC Celebrate 12th Kidney Transplant | A Milestone of Hope and Healing

Last week, The Sir Lester Bird Medical Center (SLBMC) proudly performed its 12th successful kidney transplant, a moment filled with hope, courage, and life-changing impact for the patient and their family.

For someone living with kidney failure, this isn’t just a procedure, it’s a second chance. It’s waking up with energy again. It’s more time with loved ones. It’s freedom.

This milestone reflects the power and promise of our Kidney Transplant Program, the first of its kind in the OECS. That a hospital in a small island nation like Antigua and Barbuda can provide this advanced level of care at home is extraordinary. It means patients no longer have to travel or leave their support system to get the help they need.

We’re deeply proud of what this says about our team, our country, and our commitment to excellence.

To our skilled and compassionate staff, to our nurses, anesthesiologists, nephrologists and post-op care team, and especially to Dr. Obi Ekwenna, our dedicated transplant surgeon, thank you. You are helping to transform lives, one kidney at a time.

Here’s to many more milestones.

  3. Congratulations MSJMC. I remember a story where a girl gave a politician in Antigua her kidneys because he was dying. Once he was better, he left her. I would go back under the knife to take my kidneys back. Just throwing that in the matter.
