The University of the West Indies Seismic Research Centre (UWI SRC) has recorded three earthquakes in waters near Antigua and Barbuda over the past two days, with the strongest registering a magnitude of 4.2.

The most recent seismic activity occurred on Thursday, July 10, 2025, with two earthquakes recorded within a three-hour period. The first earthquake, measuring magnitude 4.2, was detected at 6:40 am local time at coordinates 17.42°N, 61.34°W, approximately 66 kilometers northeast of Saint John’s, Antigua and Barbuda.

A second earthquake of magnitude 3.5 was recorded at the same location at 9:47 am local time, indicating continued seismic activity in the area. Both earthquakes occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers.

The day before, on July 9, 2025, another magnitude 3.5 earthquake was registered at 3:27 am. This tremor was located at coordinates 18.10°N, 61.91°W, approximately 110 kilometers north of Saint John’s, at a similar depth of 10 kilometers.

The earthquake locations place the epicenters in the waters of the Lesser Antilles, with the July 10 events occurring closer to Antigua than the July 9 earthquake. The tremors were also in the vicinity of other Caribbean islands, including Montserrat and Guadeloupe, which are located 119-149 kilometers from the various epicentres.

All three earthquakes were automatically located by computer algorithms at the UWI Seismic Research Centre. The organization has noted that these preliminary locations are subject to potential revisions pending evaluation by SRC analysts.
