Minister for Agriculture, Anthony Smith gives updates on initiatives to enhance food security

Minister of Agriculture, Anthony Smith Jr.

The Cabinet has received an important update from the Minister for Agriculture, Anthony Smith, regarding ongoing initiatives to enhance food security in Antigua.

As part of a strategic effort to reduce reliance on desalinated water for agricultural purposes, the government is moving forward with the construction of a series of new dams and water catchment ponds throughout the island.

Cabinet has approved immediate funding for a dedicated excavator that will expedite the building of these crucial water storage facilities.

This investment underscores the government’s commitment to equipping local farmers with essential resources and tools that will improve irrigation capacity and overall agricultural productivity.

Several months ago, the Cabinet decided to prioritize the creation of water catchment systems as a fundamental element of its national food production agenda.

Recognizing the importance of a reliable and affordable water supply for sustainable farming, the government is taking proactive measures to better prepare the agricultural sector for the challenges of drought and climate variability.

The Minister also reported that the Ministry of Agriculture is working hand in hand with the Geology Department of the Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA) to identify optimal locations for the new dams and ponds.

This collaboration involves thorough scientific and environmental assessments to ensure that the site selection maximizes the functionality and long-term benefits of the infrastructure.

The government views these developments as crucial steps toward enhancing climate resilience, empowering local farmers, and securing the nation’s agricultural and economic future.

  1. The water APUA is providing is too strong with chlorine for our vegetables. APUA needs to ease up on the chlorine. Even our clothes are fade their colors quickly because of the water supply. APUA water lab technicians you can do better than that. Don’t give me this excuse about old pipes why the chlorine dosage has increased. Antigua is not the only country in the world that are still running water through old outdated pipes lines.

  3. It’s a good move, but I hope the maintenance and follow-through are in place. We’ve had catchment ponds dry up before from neglect.
