The Antigua and Barbuda Ex-Servicemen’s Association officially opened the 2025 Poppy Appeal on Tuesday with a ceremony at the Cenotaph of the Antigua Grammar School, reminding the nation of its duty to honor and support those who served.

Governor General’s Deputy Sir Clare Roberts, KCN, KC, delivered the keynote address and declared the appeal open. In his remarks, he described the poppy as a symbol of remembrance and hope, reading John McCrae’s iconic In Flanders Fields to highlight the sacrifices made for freedom. Sir Clare and Lady Roberts also made the first donation, and the Chairman of the Ex-Servicemen’s Association, Philmore Mullin, pinned the first poppy on the Governor General’s Deputy to signal the start of the campaign.

Mullin used the occasion to reaffirm the Association’s mission of raising funds for veterans in need. He urged the public to support the appeal, saying the sacrifices of servicemen and women from Antigua and Barbuda, and across the Commonwealth, must never be forgotten.

The short but solemn programme was chaired by retired Major Ivor Walker and attended by several dignitaries, including Acting Commissioner of Police Everton Jeffers, Antigua Grammar School Principal Samuel Roberts, and Major Samuel Roberts, head of the National Cadet Corps. Each laid a wreath at the Cenotaph.

Students of the Antigua Grammar School played a key role in the launch, ensuring that younger generations remain connected to the values of courage, sacrifice, and national service. The ceremony also included the traditional recital of the Creed, reinforcing the poppy’s message of remembrance and peace.

The event ended with remarks from Deputy Chairman Everton Michael, who once again appealed to the public to show their support by purchasing poppies or making donations to the Ex-Servicemen’s Association.
