APUA Warns Public to Beware of Imposters and Scammers Targeting Telecom Customers and Local Businesses

The Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA) is warning the public to be on high alert for fraudulent calls and scam attempts targeting customers of APUA, Flow, Digicel, and Inet across the country.

According to APUA Communications Officer Anazette Reynolds, imposters posing as company representatives have been calling customers, attempting to collect personal and financial information under false pretenses.

In a statement issued Saturday, APUA made it clear that it does not contact customers to request email addresses, verification codes, banking details, or to click on links for so-called system updates, account upgrades, or prize claims.

“These are scam attempts designed to steal your information,” Reynolds warned. “If you receive such a call, hang up immediately and do not share any personal details.”

APUA is urging all customers to rely solely on its official communication channels — including verified phone numbers, its official website, and social media pages — for accurate updates, promotions, and service notices.

Scammers Also Targeting Local Business Owners
The warning extends beyond utility customers. Reports have surfaced that these unscrupulous individuals are also targeting local business owners, pretending to place large product orders and then requesting mobile top-ups or other forms of payment as part of the scam.

Authorities are advising businesses to verify all unfamiliar orders, especially those involving unusual payment requests or third-party transactions.

Public Urged to Stay Vigilant
APUA, along with other telecommunications providers, is reminding the public to exercise extreme caution and to report suspicious activity immediately to the police or the respective service provider.

The public is also encouraged to educate family members and elderly relatives, who may be more vulnerable to such scams.
