Law enforcement officials have seized a quantity of cannabis valued at an estimated EC$78,000 during a joint drug interdiction operation at the cargo facility of V. C. Bird International Airport.

According to the Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda, the operation took place around 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 5, when officers from the Narcotics Department, working alongside the Customs Enforcement Unit, conducted a coordinated search at the LIAT Cargo Shed.

During the exercise, officers searched two brown cardboard boxes and discovered 13 packages of cannabis with a combined weight of approximately 13 pounds.

Police said the drugs have an estimated street value of EC$78,000.

No arrests have been made in connection with the seizure at this time. However, authorities confirmed that investigations are ongoing as they work to determine the origin and intended destination of the shipment.

Police say the operation forms part of continued efforts by law enforcement agencies to disrupt the importation and trafficking of illegal drugs into Antigua and Barbuda.

Anyone with information that could assist investigators is encouraged to contact the Narcotics Department at 462-5150, the Criminal Investigations Department at 462-3913, or the Crimestoppers anonymous hotline at 800-TIPS (8477).

  2. What always surprises me is how people still try these things knowing the level of surveillance at airports. One wrong move and the whole shipment gets seized.
