Attorney General Sir Steadroy “Cutie” Benjamin
Attorney General Sir Steadroy “Cutie” Benjamin using the first sitting of the new parliamentary session to cast doubt on the legitimacy of the two opposition MPs’ absences, despite a press statement issued the day before explaining their circumstances.
Members of the ruling ABLP party was sworn in as parliamentarians on Monday, ahead of the Speech from the Throne by Governor General Sir Rodney Williams scheduled for this week.
In his brief remarks before calling for the sitting to be adjourned, Sir Steadroy said that he felt it “strange” that both opposition MPs were absent.
“Is it not passing strange that today of all days in public history some sort of excuse has been made — people being sick, travelling — is it not strange? I ask, I say yes,” he told the House.
He further described the opposition as having “disappeared” just as they did at the last elections, adding “They don’t appear, they don’t work, as a matter of fact they are a disunited bunch of people.”
The remarks were directed at UPP Leader Jamale Pringle and Barbuda People’s Movement MP Trevor Walker, both of whom were absent from the swearing-in ceremony.
A press statement issued on Sunday by the opposition confirmed that Pringle had travelled to the United States the previous week accompanying his minor daughter for a medical procedure, while Walker is attending to family matters.
Both MPs had formally notified the Clerk to Parliament of their absences and are expected to take their Oath of Allegiance at the next ordinary sitting of the House.

This question is for the attorney General! When will the next swearing in of citizenship be? So long I have paid my money at inland revenue was show the certificate, now what’s taking this long? And another thing when the certificates are ready no one from the passport office is calling individuals. Such poorly service. Im sure there’s enough man power for one person to get the names of person’s who’s certified and give them a call.
To who it may concern. When will be the next swearing in ceremony for the citizenship applicants. How how we paid out monies in to island revenue
Mr. AG, well all you do, when your child is ill, just don’t be there for for your child. Time and place!
Mr. Pringle, do your father duties in peace✌️.
Exactly. The idea ignore the fact that the child is sick. Wow
So Cutie…Are you saying that coming to parliament to witness a swearing in MP’s is more important than attending to your sick child overseas? I use to like you Cutie. Now I dont
Well we all know what this man would do. Clearly Cutie your heart is not BIG
Cutie really cold for this one. Politics aside, if a man child sick and he had to travel for a medical procedure, where is the compassion? Not everything needs to become political theatre. A father taking care of his daughter should never be turned into some cheap point-scoring exercise in Parliament.
The opposition sent a statement, informed Parliament and followed the process. So what exactly was the issue? Sometimes some of these politicians act like once you’re on the other side, basic human decency goes out the window.
People can disagree with Pringle all day, but if your first response to hearing somebody’s child sick is to throw jabs and question excuses, that just don’t sit right. There’s a time to attack politics and a time to show humanity. This wasn’t the moment for that.
AG we share the same thoughts cause I felt like this was calculated
