A Vincentian national has been arrested and charged in connection with a collision that left national cyclist Tahje Browne hospitalized, after authorities intercepted him at the airport while he was reportedly attempting to leave the country.
Police have charged 24-year-old Kishroy Harry with dangerous driving, driving without the owner’s consent, driving without a valid driver’s licence, and driving without insurance coverage.
The charges stem from a collision that occurred on Saturday, June 20, along Sir Sydney Walling Highway near the Antigua and Barbuda Transport Board. Browne was riding his bicycle when he was struck by a Toyota Vitz motor car.
Video footage of the incident, which has been widely shared across social media platforms, shows the impact that knocked the national cyclist from his bicycle.
Browne was transported to the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre, where he later underwent surgery. He is reported to be recovering from his injuries.
According to reports, Harry disposed of the clothing he had been wearing at the time of the accident in the hours following the collision. Investigators later learned that he was preparing to leave Antigua and Barbuda.
On Sunday, June 21, police intercepted Harry at V.C. Bird International Airport as he attempted to board a flight bound for St. Vincent. He was subsequently arrested and later charged in connection with the incident.
The case has attracted significant public attention, particularly within the cycling community, where many have been calling for accountability following the crash involving one of the country’s top cyclists.
Harry is expected to make his first appearance before the Magistrate’s Court on Thursday. Police investigations into the matter are ongoing.
