“Gassy Dread” Urges Tian Winter to ‘Level Up’ and Embrace AI in Music

Prime Minister Gaston Browne who goes by the stage name Gassy Dread has offered what he describes as friendly and constructive advice to Tian Winter, urging the veteran soca artist to embrace artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies as tools that could strengthen his music and extend his career.

In a social media post, Gassy Dread, who made it clear that he remains a fan of Winter, said the debate surrounding AI-generated music should not simply be about rejecting the technology, but exploring how it can be used to enhance musical production.

“Instead of beating down AI and other technologies, you would be best advised to use the technologies to assist with your musical production,” he wrote.

According to Gassy Dread, the use of such technology could help Winter achieve “greater longevity and relevance” in an increasingly competitive international music industry.

He also sought to distinguish his own involvement in music from that of established performers, explaining that he has no ambition to pursue a professional musical career.
Gassy Dread said he is merely “dabbling in the technology” to demonstrate the possibilities and opportunities it presents.

He added that his musical productions are not driven by money, but are instead used as a vehicle to promote messages on issues including reparations, climate change, non-communicable diseases, conflict, peace and love.

But his comments went beyond the AI debate.

Gassy Dread renewed his call for changes to the rules governing local music competitions, arguing that previously produced and dated songs should not be allowed to compete.

“I maintain that the competition rules should change to ban previously produced, dated songs,” he said, arguing that competitions should encourage fresh creativity and productions capable of competing internationally.

He was particularly critical of what he described as “stale domesticated music,” contending that music created primarily for the local competition circuit has limited export potential and could ultimately stifle creativity.

Gassy Dread then challenged Winter to set his sights beyond dominating competitions at home.

“I am still your fan, but perhaps you too need to level up,” he wrote.

“Don’t limit your ambition to be a domestic competition bully, that cannot sustain your career; become a world class artist, that makes exportable music — you have the talent.”

Despite the pointed criticism, Gassy Dread maintained a friendly tone and openly invited Winter to respond.

“Feel free to fire back with your best punch,” he said.

He added that debate and constructive criticism are healthy and can bring out the best in people who respond positively.

Gassy Dread ended his message with “much love and blessings,” signing off as “The Rasta Dreadman.”
