More Surveillance Cameras Planned as Government Targets Brazen Gun Crime
Antigua and Barbuda could see an expansion of its public surveillance network as the government looks to technology to help confront a recent rise in gun violence.
Prime Minister Gaston Browne said over the weekend that the country already has about 200 surveillance cameras installed, but more will be needed as authorities respond to increasingly brazen criminal activity.
He pointed specifically to the recent daylight shooting near the West Bus Station, saying the location is normally heavily populated and that the willingness of gunmen to open fire in such an environment is cause for concern.
Browne suggested that greater camera coverage could assist police both as a deterrent and in identifying people involved in serious crimes.
The West Bus Station incident left two young men injured and triggered a police investigation. The shooting was one of several violent incidents that have renewed public debate over gangs, illegal firearms and youth violence.
The Prime Minister said the government intends to examine additional strategies at Monday’s meeting, bringing together law enforcement, border agencies and the ICT Ministry.
He also stressed, however, that cameras alone will not solve the problem, saying residents with information must be willing to cooperate with investigators.
