‘Music Carries Carnival’: Browne Challenges Artistes to Raise the Standard
Prime Minister Gaston Browne says Antigua Carnival needs stronger local music if official competitions are to regain packed audiences and compete with the island’s growing private fête scene.
Browne used his weekly radio programme over the weekend to challenge artistes to produce more original and higher-quality material, saying music remains one of the main drivers of a successful Carnival.
He rejected arguments that the April general election left artistes with insufficient time to prepare, saying performers effectively have an entire year between Carnivals to develop their music.
The Prime Minister recalled periods when leading artistes produced full albums and several songs were strong enough to compete for major titles.
He argued that today’s performers have access to more production tools than earlier generations and should use technology to improve their work.
Browne specifically mentioned artificial intelligence and other digital tools, not as replacements for creativity, but as resources that can help artistes experiment with melodies, writing and rhyming.
He said online views are valuable but should not become an excuse for empty venues.
According to Browne, official shows still need people in the grounds, and strong music is essential to bringing audiences back.
The comments come as debate begins over possible changes to the Carnival calendar ahead of the 70th anniversary celebrations in 2027.
