The Government of Antigua and Barbuda says nationals receiving medical treatment in Colombia remain safe and their care has not been interrupted following an earthquake in the South American country.

The Ministry of Health, Wellness, Environment and Civil Service Affairs has contacted the hospitals treating Antiguan and Barbudan patients, along with the facilities accommodating them and their accompanying relatives.

According to the ministry, the hospitals remain operational with skeletal staff in the aftermath of the earthquake. Medical services for patients from Antigua and Barbuda are continuing, with arrangements in place to ensure their treatment is maintained.

The accommodation facilities housing the patients and accompanying persons reportedly sustained minimal or no damage and continue to operate without significant disruption.

Minister of Health, Wellness, Environment and Civil Service Affairs Michael Joseph said the welfare of citizens receiving overseas medical care remains the Government’s immediate priority.

“I am pleased that, based on the information received, our patients continue to receive the care they require and that the facilities accommodating our citizens remain largely unaffected,” Joseph said.

“We will continue to stay in contact with our partners on the ground and will respond appropriately should circumstances change.”

The ministry acknowledged that the earthquake may have caused concern among relatives of patients in Colombia and assured families that it will continue communicating with healthcare and accommodation providers.

The Government also extended its sympathies to the people of Colombia as emergency response and recovery efforts continue.
