Sports Minister Dwayne George Pledges Support as Antigua and Barbuda Special Olympics Team Prepares for Jamaica Games

Minister of Sports and Creative Industries Dwayne George has pledged the Government’s continued support for Antigua and Barbuda’s Special Olympics team as athletes prepare to represent the country at major regional and international events.

George gave the assurance on Tuesday morning during a meeting with National Director of Special Olympics Antigua and Barbuda, Joy-Ann Harrigan.

Harrigan, who also serves as Education Officer-Special Needs within the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, briefed the minister on the work of Special Olympics Antigua and Barbuda and its commitment to athletes from the Adele School for Special Children and other public educational institutions.

She also highlighted the support the organisation receives from the Government, the National Olympic Committee and the Antigua and Barbuda Athletic Association, including the use of YASCO for training.

Team Antigua and Barbuda is preparing to participate in the Special Olympics Caribbean Beach Games in Montego Bay, Jamaica, from November 18 to 22, 2026.

The country is also expected to compete at the 2027 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Santiago, Chile, from October 16 to 24.

During Tuesday’s meeting, Harrigan appealed to George for financial assistance to help cover airfare for the athletes and members of the management team travelling to Jamaica later this year.

George assured Harrigan of the Government’s unwavering support and stressed the importance of creating opportunities at every level for students with special educational needs.

The minister advised Harrigan to make the necessary written submissions to his ministry before the Government moves to honour the request.

Special Olympics provides students with special educational needs an avenue to participate in sporting activities and showcase their athletic abilities.
