The Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda will receive new equipment to tackle illegal vehicle tinting, drunk driving and speeding.

Cabinet has approved US$30,000 for the purchase of 25 tint meters, 25 professional breathalysers and 12 handheld radar devices.

The recommendation was presented by Attorney General and Minister responsible for Public Safety Sir Steadroy Benjamin.

Cabinet said the equipment is necessary because of continuing concerns over traffic accidents and the role played by excessive speed and intoxicated driving in serious collisions.

Police have also raised concerns about the widespread use of excessively dark vehicle tint, which obstructs visibility inside vehicles and creates challenges for law-enforcement officers.

The tint meters will enable officers to objectively determine whether vehicle windows comply with the legally permitted tint level.

The breathalysers will be used to test drivers suspected of operating vehicles while intoxicated, while the radar devices will help officers identify motorists travelling above established speed limits.

Cabinet said the equipment will help officers detect violations, apprehend offenders and provide evidence to support prosecutions.

The Government is also concerned that heavily tinted vehicles can conceal the identities and activities of occupants and may be exploited by people involved in criminal activity.

Cabinet said improved enforcement of vehicle-tint laws will complement other crime-fighting measures while contributing to safer roads.
