Rewards for information assisting law enforcement have been increased to as much as $500,000 in major cases, while information leading police to an illegal firearm could attract $5,000, Prime Minister Gaston Browne said Saturday.
Browne said the firearm reward may exceed the street value of some weapons, giving people a strong incentive to help remove guns from communities.
The initiative is intended to strengthen intelligence-sharing as police intensify stop-and-search operations and the government expands its surveillance network.
The Prime Minister also called for stronger community policing, saying residents are more likely to provide information when they trust and have confidence in law-enforcement officers.
He did not specify the categories of cases that would qualify for the maximum $500,000 payment or the evidentiary conditions that would have to be met before a reward is issued.
