Prime Minister Gaston Browne has blamed repeated vandalism of public buildings, bus shelters and sporting facilities on a wider decline in discipline, civic values and national pride.
Last week, several government buildings, including the Treasury Building, were destroyed in what police say were suspected cases of vandalism.
Browne said law enforcement could not solve every behavioural problem and questioned how anyone could find enjoyment in damaging assets paid for by taxpayers.
His comments followed reports of objects being thrown through windows at public offices in St John’s and continuing damage to recreational facilities.
The Prime Minister called for stronger public education and changes within schools to teach children to value public property, keep communities clean and reject indiscriminate littering.
He rejected the idea that such behaviour was solely linked to poverty, recalling that communities and schools were often kept clean during periods when families had far fewer material resources.
Prime minister, they are angry young men with no discipline or respect. Schools can reinforce positive values that are displayed at home and in the community at large but they can rarely change a student’s values.
Parents must be strong parents, be present in their children’s lives and practice good values at home. Then schools can reinforce those values.
When caught, that person or persons must be used as an example for others not to follow such idea or ideas.
How can anyone expect “national pride” when the country is overrun with foreigners who are the dregs of society from other nations? How can you expect it when true nationals can’t get land and jobs, but foreigners are given them easily and freely? National pride when we don’t have enough because outsiders get it all? Look at the cause of the disease in this country, not the symptoms.
I mean really. What would possess a person to do such things? It just baffles me
