Work on Antigua and Barbuda’s National Performing Arts Centre remains on schedule for completion by September 30, according to National Housing Chairman Rawdon Turner.

The former Deluxe Cinema is being transformed into an 875-seat performing arts centre and will host the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in November.

Turner said during an interview on ABS Television Tuesday morning that the major construction components have been completed and work has moved into the finishing stage.

“We’re on track for the 30th of September. That’s the deadline we’ve been given, and that’s what we’re going to work with,” he said.

Acoustic carpeting is being installed on the walls, while carpeting is also being laid on the floors.

Installation of the seats is expected to begin on September 1 and should take approximately seven days.

Equipment for the stage is also due to arrive on September 1. The shipment will include LED screens, backdrops, audiovisual equipment, lighting and speakers.

Turner said installation of the technical equipment is expected to take approximately two and a half weeks.

Work is also underway to create a dancer-friendly stage. Timber and a specialised surface will be installed over the existing concrete base to make it more suitable for performers.

The bathrooms are approximately 90 per cent complete, with toilets and washbasins still to be installed. The main lobby has also been completed, apart from the installation of lighting fixtures.

Members of the performing arts community have been invited to submit photographs and artwork that tell the story of Antigua and Barbuda’s culture for display inside the centre.

Exterior cladding is also being installed. Turner said the prefinished material should be fitted within two weeks.

Although the building’s exterior may lead some people to question whether the project will meet its deadline, Turner insisted that the work remains on schedule.

“We have to deliver,” he said.
