​Cabinet has welcomed the latest strengthening of emergency response and security capabilities at V.C. Bird International Airport, including the addition of two emergency vehicles and plans for a new X-ray screening machine.

The two vehicles are being handed over to the airport to boost the resources available to firefighters, emergency medical personnel and other response teams in the event of an emergency.

Cabinet was also informed that Allen & Co. has committed to donating an XRC 60-40 X-ray screening machine, which will provide additional support to security personnel and enhance the airport’s existing screening capabilities.

The company has previously assisted the airport with specialised emergency equipment, including the donation of a Jaws of Life rescue tool when additional rescue capability was needed.

During discussions surrounding the latest equipment, emphasis was placed on ensuring that personnel are properly trained to operate and maintain specialised machinery.

Cabinet noted that maintenance, technical support and access to replacement parts are particularly important in Antigua and Barbuda, where obtaining specialised resources can sometimes present logistical challenges.

Airport personnel who will operate the new emergency equipment are being encouraged to train extensively with it and ensure it remains ready for use whenever required.

The government said emergency preparedness and aviation security remain critical to the safe and efficient operation of the country’s main international gateway, particularly as technology and international safety requirements continue to evolve.
