Government Reviews Pay Rates for Heavy-Duty Equipment Operators

Heavy-duty equipment operators in the public service could see changes to their pay as the government begins a review of whether current rates adequately reflect their skills, responsibilities and working conditions.

Cabinet has established a subcommittee to examine the existing pay structure and compare it with what operators performing similar work are earning in the private sector.

The decision followed discussions with senior Ministry of Works officials, including the Junior Minister, Permanent Secretary, Director and Deputy Director.

Officials outlined several factors affecting remuneration, including the technical skills and experience required to operate specialised machinery, working conditions and the level of responsibility involved.

The subcommittee comprises the Minister for Works and her Junior Minister, the Attorney General and the Minister for Social Transformation.

It will examine the different classifications of heavy-duty equipment operators, along with their qualifications, experience, responsibilities and prevailing labour-market rates.

Cabinet has also directed that the relevant trade union be consulted before recommendations are submitted.

The government said heavy-duty equipment operators play an important role in the construction and maintenance of the country’s infrastructure and acknowledged the specialised nature of their work.

However, Cabinet said any adjustment must also be considered within the wider public-sector wage structure and the government’s fiscal responsibilities.

No decision has yet been made on whether operators will receive a pay increase.

The subcommittee will conduct its assessment and consultations before submitting recommendations to Cabinet for a final decision.
