APUA Urges Customers to Conserve Electricity as Costs Rise

29 August 2026 - 16:23

The Antigua Public Utilities Authority is urging households and businesses to conserve electricity as international fuel prices and local consumption continue to increase.

Acting Financial Controller Sabrina Benjamin said customers must consider whether their household finances can support changing consumption patterns.

She encouraged people to monitor air-conditioning use, switch off appliances when they are not needed and become more familiar with the information displayed on their utility bills.

Electricity Business Unit Manager Andre Matthias said high temperatures have caused many people to use air conditioners more frequently and for longer periods.

Even inverter air-conditioning units, which are generally more efficient, will increase a household’s bill if they are used extensively.

Utilities Minister Melford Nicholas said conservation will not only assist APUA but will help customers manage their own budgets during the period of higher fuel prices.

Officials also encouraged customers to compare their average daily consumption instead of looking only at the total amount due.

The daily figure can help determine whether an increase resulted from heavier usage or simply from a longer billing period.

Customers who remain convinced that their bills are incorrect are being encouraged to request an investigation at an APUA customer service centre.

  3. We can turn off the fridge at nights if there are no meat kind in there. It will still remain cold. Iron all cloths at once. Turn off bathroom lights not in use. Many things we can do. Else pay that bill!!!
