Antigua and Barbuda Thankful as Dolly Brings Beneficial Rain Without Major Impact

Antigua and Barbuda received up to two inches of rainfall as the remnants of Tropical Storm Dolly moved across the area between Saturday and Sunday.

Dolly had weakened into a tropical wave before reaching the country and did not produce the severe conditions initially feared. However, the system generated periods of moderate to heavy showers, bringing welcome rainfall to several communities.

The Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Service confirmed that the tropical wave had moved away from the Leeward Islands, although lingering moisture continued to produce showers into Sunday night.

While the rainfall was not as widespread or intense as some residents had anticipated, it provided a much-needed boost amid concerns about dry conditions and water availability.

The unsettled weather nevertheless disrupted several weekend activities. Religious services, sporting competitions and entertainment events were either cancelled or postponed as organisers exercised caution.

Several churches cancelled in-person worship and used alternative arrangements after a flash-flood warning was issued. The warning remained in effect until midday Sunday.

Forecasters indicated that residual moisture could continue producing showers into Monday, despite the main tropical wave having already passed.

Fortunately, there were no immediate reports of major flooding, widespread damage or serious weather-related incidents.

For a country that has faced prolonged dry spells, the rainfall was welcomed—even if Dolly did not deliver as much as some had hoped.

Residents remain thankful for the showers and, more importantly, that the system passed without causing significant disruption or destruction.

Antigua and Barbuda and the wider Leeward Islands are now entering the climatological peak of the Atlantic hurricane season, traditionally extending from late August through the middle of September.

Residents are therefore being encouraged to remain prepared and continue monitoring official updates from the Meteorological Service and the National Office of Disaster Services.
