A mother’s quick action may have helped shield her young baby from danger after a masked gunman opened fire through the window of their apartment off Friars Hill Road early Tuesday morning.
The 43-year-old woman was shot in the leg during the incident, which reportedly occurred at about 2:45 a.m.
She told investigators that she and her baby were asleep when she was awakened by sounds of someone attempting to enter the apartment.
The intruder, who was reportedly masked and armed with a gun, was unable to gain entry to the home.
He then allegedly fired two shots through a window, with one of the bullets striking the woman in the leg.
Amid the gunfire, the injured mother reportedly managed to push her baby off the bed and out of harm’s way.
The child escaped the ordeal unharmed.
The woman was taken to hospital, where she is receiving treatment for her injury.
Police are now working to identify and locate the gunman and are appealing to members of the public for assistance.

To how I see it the police and politicians have hand in these criminal acts because there are more laws protecting the criminals than the victims. So now when the victims start to defend them selves and leave them for the cops to find they can’t say anything because the only thing their interested in is taking the tax payers money and build bar for police and all kinds of things. You haven’t realize the huge number of obese police officers in Antigua who can they chase other than food.😂

We need more patrols, especially during the early-morning hours. Criminals are becoming too bold. This gun situation is getting out of control. Where are all these illegal firearms coming from?
This is honestly frightening. Imagine being at home, minding your own business, and somebody firing shots through your window during a break-in. No family should have to live with that kind of fear. I really hope the mother makes a full recovery and that whoever is responsible is caught and brought before the court.

That mother is a hero. Even after being shot, her first thought was probably protecting her baby.
