Forensic Services to Become Distinct Legal Institution
Antigua and Barbuda’s forensic services could soon be formally established as a distinct institution under legislation scheduled to go before Parliament on September 18.
The Antigua and Barbuda Forensic Services Bill, 2026, is intended to strengthen the country’s ability to conduct forensic examinations and analyses in support of criminal investigations and the administration of justice.
Cabinet said stronger forensic capability is increasingly important as police and prosecutors rely more heavily on scientific evidence and modern investigative techniques to detect and prosecute serious crimes.
The legislation is part of a broader package of justice and public-safety reforms announced by Attorney General Sir Steadroy Benjamin.
Other measures will address policing, firearm offences, magistrates’ sentencing powers, fire and rescue services and mental-health care.
Cabinet said establishing forensic services in law will strengthen the institutional framework available to investigators and the courts.
