Kurt Menal

New Chief Executive Officer of the Antigua and Barbuda Airport Authority, Kurt Menal, has outlined plans to make V.C. Bird International Airport safer, cleaner, more reliable and more efficient, while improving the experience of passengers.

Menal, who has been in the post for approximately one month, was formally introduced to Cabinet on Wednesday. He was accompanied by Airport Authority Board Chairman Rolston Potter.

The new CEO told Cabinet that he has been impressed by the quality and capacity of the Airport Authority’s team, as well as the investments already made in the airport’s infrastructure. These include the recently completed rehabilitation of the runway and airside facilities.

One of Menal’s first priorities will be establishing a clear strategic direction for the Authority that aligns with the Government’s plans for aviation and wider economic development.

A comprehensive five-year strategic plan will be developed through consultations with the Government, the Board, employees and industry stakeholders. It will complement the airport master plan already approved by Cabinet.

Menal also plans to strengthen the Authority’s commercial performance, increase revenue and make better use of available commercial space inside the terminal.

The airport’s development strategy is expected to support Antigua and Barbuda’s growing premium tourism market while continuing to serve the wider tourism industry.

Menal said he will work with the Ministry of Tourism and the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority to strengthen existing airline relationships and explore new routes and markets. Potential connections to Central and South America will receive particular attention.

He has also begun a 90-day engagement programme with employees, departments, government agencies and other stakeholders to gain a fuller understanding of the Authority’s operations and organisational culture.

Cabinet welcomed the presentation and pledged its support for the continued development of modern, safe, efficient and passenger-focused airports.
