Parliament is expected to consider new legislation aimed at modernising how people requiring mental-health treatment and intervention are cared for in Antigua and Barbuda.

The Mental Health Care Bill, 2026, is scheduled to be presented when the House of Representatives meets on September 18.

Attorney General Sir Steadroy Benjamin told Cabinet that the legislation will update the legal framework governing mental-health treatment and care.

It is also intended to improve procedures so that people requiring intervention can receive appropriate attention without unnecessary delays caused by outdated processes.

The Bill forms part of a major legislative agenda that also includes reforms to policing, firearm penalties, forensic services, fire and rescue operations and the powers of magistrates.
