The Antigua and Barbuda Airport Authority is moving to procure two new baggage-handling units to improve reliability at V.C. Bird International Airport, particularly during peak travel periods.
Cabinet was told that a Request for Proposal is being advanced for the equipment as the airport seeks to address longstanding baggage-handling challenges.
The addition of two units is expected to provide greater reliability and redundancy, reducing the risk that operations will be severely affected if one unit develops a problem.
The procurement is being treated as a priority because of its potential to improve operational efficiency, airport security and the overall passenger experience.
New Airport Authority CEO Kurt Menal included the update in a presentation to Cabinet on Wednesday.
Menal said technology, improved systems and better processes will be used to maximise the efficiency of the airport’s existing facilities as passenger traffic and the tourism industry continue to grow.
