A cable fault that sparked a fire at the Antigua Power Company’s No. 5 generator triggered a system-wide electricity outage across Antigua on Monday afternoon.
According to a joint statement, the affected generator supplies approximately 15 megawatts of power to the national electricity system. Its sudden failure caused a major disruption, leaving customers across the island without electricity.
Antigua Power Company supplies electricity to the Antigua Public Utilities Authority, which distributes it to homes and businesses throughout the country.
APUA said it remained in close communication with APC while technicians assessed and addressed the generation fault.
APC subsequently activated alternative generation from its liquefied natural gas plant, allowing electricity service to be restored gradually across the network.
Electricity has since been fully restored to all customers.
Both companies described the incident as unforeseen and apologised for the inconvenience caused.
“We thank our customers for their patience and understanding throughout the outage and restoration process,” the statement said.
