Low-lying and flood-prone communities across Antigua and Barbuda are being urged to remain cautious this evening as periods of heavy rainfall continue to affect the islands.

The Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Services has issued a Flash Flood Advisory for minor flooding, which remains in effect until 8 p.m. Wednesday.

According to the Met Office, moisture and instability associated with a tropical wave are influencing weather conditions across the Leeward Islands, resulting in periodic heavy showers. Similar conditions are expected to continue into the evening.

The advisory means that streams, creeks and drains could become elevated or overflow, resulting in water spreading onto streets and into other low-lying and flood-prone areas. Any property damage associated with the expected flooding is anticipated to be minimal.

Motorists are being advised to exercise particular caution during moderate to heavy showers, as reduced visibility could make driving conditions hazardous.

Drivers are also strongly advised not to attempt to travel through flooded roads.

The Meteorological Services said it will continue monitoring conditions and encouraged residents to remain tuned to local radio and television stations for the latest information.

Forecaster Lenard Josiah issued the advisory at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
