Royal Presence Marks Antigua and Barbuda’s 45th Independence Parade
King Charles III and Queen Camilla join national leaders and spectators at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium for an evening of military ceremony, patriotic music and national recognition.
Antigua and Barbuda celebrated its 45th anniversary of Independence on Sunday with a ceremonial parade and National Honours ceremony attended by King Charles III and Queen Camilla at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium.
The November 1 event brought together uniformed organisations, national leaders and spectators for a celebration of the country’s sovereignty, service and cultural identity.
Governor General Sir Rodney Williams, Prime Minister Gaston Browne and Minister Maria Browne were among the dignitaries attending the ceremony, which coincided with Antigua and Barbuda’s hosting of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.
Spectators dressed in national colours and Madras filled the stands, waving flags as the armed and unarmed contingents assembled on the field.

King Charles inspected the parade, pausing to speak with selected members of the uniformed services before taking his place for the ceremonial proceedings.
The programme included the presentation of colours, military salutes, a march-past and patriotic music, with the precision of the participating contingents reflecting weeks of preparation.
Members of the Antigua and Barbuda Defence Force, the Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda and youth organisations were among those participating.
During ABS Television’s live coverage, military commentators explained that preparations had begun as early as September, with internal rehearsals followed by coordinated practice to bring the parade together.
The evening also celebrated local culture. The band incorporated familiar Antiguan and Barbudan music into its repertoire, while an ensemble assembled by pianist Dr George Roberts led patriotic singing.
National honours formed a central part of the programme, recognising contributions to philanthropy, law, music, youth development, sport and disability advocacy.
The ceremony unfolded before both a local audience and international media covering the Commonwealth gathering, placing Antigua and Barbuda’s anniversary celebrations before viewers beyond its shores.
Despite rain during the evening, spectators remained to witness the proceedings, which combined formal state ceremony with the music, colour and community participation of Independence.
Antigua and Barbuda attained political independence on November 1, 1981.
