Browne Seeks Singapore Partnership for Antigua’s Port Expansion
Leaders explore cooperation in port development, trade, education and digital transformation, with Singapore’s PSA to assess potential involvement in Antigua’s seaport.
Prime Minister Gaston Browne has invited Singapore to explore investment and technical support for Antigua and Barbuda’s port development as the country seeks to establish a modern transshipment hub serving the wider Caribbean.
Browne met with Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister at Jumby Bay Island on November 4, on the margins of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) 2026.
During the talks, Browne said the Government had invested approximately US$100 million in expanding and modernising the seaport and planned to invest a similar amount in its further development.
He proposed that Singapore’s port operator, PSA, consider participating in the project, drawing on its experience in international shipping, port management and supply-chain operations.
Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister welcomed the proposal and indicated that he would ask PSA to assess the potential for involvement. He noted that the company operates and invests in ports internationally, connecting them through integrated supply-chain networks.
The leaders also explored closer cooperation in tourism, trade, maritime services, education and public administration. Browne expressed interest in student exchanges and a broader agreement to facilitate technical expertise and training.
Digitalisation and artificial intelligence were also discussed, with Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister highlighting the importance of preparing citizens through education and training for emerging employment opportunities.
Both leaders emphasised the value of cooperation among small states in strengthening their economies and international influence. Browne, who is also Commonwealth Chairman-in-Office, reaffirmed Antigua and Barbuda’s support for Singapore in international forums.
