At Wednesday’s Cabinet, discussions were centered around the President’s address to Congress, leading to a decision to delay any policy actions until a thorough assessment of the implications of Mr. Trump’s announcements can be made.

Sources indicate concerns about the unpredictable consequences of the current turmoil in the US, noting a decline in the US Stock Market and other economic indicators since the President took office.

Such downturns in the US economy are likely to affect tourist behaviors, as a significant drop in GDP could lead to fewer US travelers seeking luxury experiences abroad.
Given that the US is responsible for over half of Antigua and Barbuda’s tourist arrivals, a decrease in visitors could have far-reaching consequences for the local economy.
In light of the looming uncertainties, the Cabinet has also turned its attention to issues surrounding food security.

In a collaborative effort, several officials from the Ministry of Agriculture, alongside a local farmer, were convened to explore strategies for enhancing food production, particularly in poultry, eggs, fruits, and vegetables.

Acknowledging the increased likelihood of droughts due to climate change, the Cabinet highlighted the urgency of improving water storage practices among farmers. This would involve the construction of various small and large dams to capture rainfall effectively. While the nation remains self-sufficient in egg production, rising feed costs necessitate the development of local poultry feed production to stabilize prices.

Additionally, the Cabinet is promoting initiatives such as backyard gardening and broader food production efforts. Plans are even underway to revitalize the abandoned coconut plantation in Barbuda through collaboration with the Barbuda Council, aiming to enhance local agricultural productivity.
