On Wednesday, the management team of the Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA) met with the Cabinet to discuss essential developments regarding the deepening of the channel in the North Sound area.
This initiative aims to accommodate vessels transporting Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) and cement supplies, which are crucial for the island’s infrastructure and energy needs.
According to the existing agreement, APUA is responsible for financing the dredging and preparation of the channel to facilitate the passage of larger vessels. This infrastructure enhancement is vital as it ensures that the North Sound can support increased maritime traffic, particularly for these significant cargoes.
Cabinet members were assured by APUA that the dredging carried out in February 2025 would correspond to the financial investments made.
The authority emphasized that every dollar spent would reflect the quality of the work undertaken, reassuring Cabinet that accountability and transparency are priorities in this significant project.
Moving forward, APUA will be required to provide monthly updates to the Cabinet, highlighting the progress of the dredging operations and the subsequent impact on vessel traffic in the area.
