Gov’t breaks ground for Aquatic Center

The government of Antigua and Barbuda has officially broken ground for the Aquatic Center at the Sir Novell Richards Academy, a facility that is expected to improve the overall wellness and health of those who will utilize it

The initiative is the brainchild of the ABLP government and will be fully equipped with the amenities to attract regional and international events including a feature a 25-meter 10-lane competition pool with a warmup pool, a gym, two spectator stands with a 600-person capacity, and facilities for both male and female competitor

Prime Minister Gaston Browne said his administration is determined to build out the sporting facilities in Antigua and Barbuda, to ensure that the country can host international guests and athletes can compete with international competitors.

Construction is expected to begin in about two weeks, according to Browne, who also for the first time talked about a second aspect of the project.

“The second phase will include the construction of recreational pool facilities with slides and other facilities to provide opportunities to bring their young children so they can get involved in water sports at an early age…even toddlers,” Browne adds.

“For us, it’s a next-level development and you can see it happening right before your eyes,” he said.

Meanwhile, Education Minister Daryll Mathew says discussions on the new aquatic center started in 2018.

He said the government is not just only committed to sports, but health and wellness and young people.

“I am imploring all of you swimmers to appreciate the sacrifices. When we live in an era of Covid-19 where resources are scarce and funds are tight, and we have decided to commit the funds and resources to ensure this center becomes a reality, it is something significant,” Mathew said.

He said the government also intends to construct a modern multi-sports indoor facility.

And, Parliamentary Representative for St George Dean Jonas says it will serve to move the nation’s development to the next level.
