Health Minister Molwyn Joseph has said the new legislation will be soon put in place to tackle the chronic non-communicable diseases in the country.
Sir Molwyn told those gathered at the Heart and Stroke Foundation’s fourth annual symposium held recently.
“We have made some strides. For instance, Antigua and Barbuda was the first state in the US to pass legislation to ban tobacco smoking in public. We are now just tweaking the regulations to be more specific,” Sir Molwyn added.
According to Joseph, the legislation will also deal with the issue of smoking in public, saying that discussions on these matters must be discussed more in the public.
“We have reached the stage where every gathering in Antigua and Barbuda. Should be discussing the crisis we are facing as human beings…In Antigua and Barbuda. We have to be bold. We have to be honest. And we have to say that there has to be a dramatic behavioral change in Antigua and Barbuda insofar as consumption is concerned,” Joseph said.
Echoing Sir Molwyn’s sentiments was Governor-General Sir Rodney Williams who called for more health, and education about chronic non-communicable diseases.
“We cannot grow weary in our continued work in health, education, and treatment, our nation’s health, and by extension, by extension, our nation’s wealth depends on it,” he added.
