A group of concerned citizens have organized a peaceful protest scheduled to take place at Dickenson Bay this morning. It will be held on the Halcyon Beach.
The purpose of the protest, according to the organizers, is to raise awareness about what they say is an attempt to privatize the beaches in Antigua.
The organizers firmly believe that the beaches should be available to everyone, regardless of their social status or financial means.
The protest is set to commence at 9 am and will continue until 6 pm.
The organizers have planned a beach day, which will involve various activities to promote their cause.
The protest has been triggered by the ongoing dispute between Royalton Chic and a local businessman, Peter Kelsick.
Kelsick has operated a small bar on the beach for many years. However, he claims that the hotel recently displaced him, which has caused much controversy.
Kelsick was in negotiations with the hotel but had a change of heart at the last minute.
He is taking legal action against Royalton Chic, but the hotel’s compensation package has not been disclosed but it is said to have been quite a lofty sum
Kelsick insists that the hotel had no right to ask him to move since this was his livelihood.
The protest organizers have been informed that their actions could negatively affect the construction of Royalton Chic, a US75M investment that employs close to 800 residents.
Despite the warnings, the organizers have decided to proceed with their protest to ensure that the voices of the people are heard.
