Hurricane Beryl has strengthened to a Category 4 storm, packing maximum sustained winds of 130 mph as it moves west-northwest across the Caribbean. The powerful hurricane is currently located about 100 miles west of Kingston, Jamaica, and 215 miles east-southeast of Grand Cayman.

The National Hurricane Center has issued hurricane warnings for Jamaica, the Cayman Islands, and parts of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. Tropical storm warnings and watches are in effect for additional areas, including portions of Belize.

Beryl is expected to bring life-threatening conditions to the region, including:

  1. Destructive winds up to 130 mph
  2. Storm surge of 6 to 9 feet in Jamaica and 4 to 6 feet along the Yucatan Peninsula
  3. Heavy rainfall of 4 to 8 inches, with localized amounts up to 12 inches, potentially causing flash floods and mudslides
  4. Dangerous surf and rip currents

The hurricane is forecast to pass near the Cayman Islands tonight before making landfall on the Yucatan Peninsula late Thursday or early Friday. Residents in affected areas are urged to complete preparations immediately and follow instructions from local authorities.

After crossing the Yucatan, Beryl is expected to emerge over the southwestern Gulf of Mexico, potentially impacting other areas including southern Texas. All interests in the region should closely monitor the storm’s progress.
