Excessive heat conditions to continue until Tuesday

The Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Service has extended its Excessive Heat Watch, initially set to end on Friday, until Tuesday as the region continues to grapple with soaring temperatures.

This extension indicates that dangerously hot conditions are expected to persist longer than initially anticipated, raising concerns about public health and safety.

According to the Met Office, the heat index, or “feels-like” temperature, could reach or exceed 38°C (100°F) during the hottest parts of the day, typically from 10am to 4pm.

The combination of light winds and high humidity is contributing to these potentially hazardous conditions.

Officials continue to express particular concern for vulnerable groups, including the elderly, young children, lactating mothers, people with chronic illnesses, outdoor workers, the homeless, and low-income earners. The extended duration of the heatwave increases the risk of heat-related illnesses such as heat stroke, exhaustion, fainting, cramps, rash, and edema.

In light of the prolonged heat event, authorities are reinforcing their advice to residents:

1. Stay alert and take precautions to stay cool and hydrated.

2. Check on vulnerable family members, friends, and neighbors regularly.

3. Those with health conditions or on medication should consult their doctors about increased heat-related risks.

4. Move to a cool place and drink water if experiencing heat-related symptoms.

5. Call 911 immediately for severe cases, especially those showing signs of heat stroke.
